Types of words in the English Language
and How to Use Them

There are seven types of words that exist in the English language:

  • Nouns: are words for People, Things, Places (You must ALWAYS choose Singular/Plural/Non-count)
  • Verbs: are words for Action (You must ALWAYS choose the TIME of the action – Past, Present, Future)
  • Adjectives: describe nouns (Adj + Noun)
  • Adverbs: describe verbs, adjectives, other adverbs and complete sentences/clauses (Verb + Adv) (Adv + Adj + Noun
  • Prepositions: explain the relationship between nouns (The book is ON the table. The book is UNDER the table….etc.)
  • Conjunctions: (we didn’t talk about this, but here it is:) explain the relationship between sentences. (examples: but, and, although, however, because….etc)
  • Articles: (a, an, the) count or specify nouns
